Differences at Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and League of Legends
Ask any Singaporean bettor what is their go-to game for online betting, and their answers will likely include Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) or League of Legends (LOL). But what is the difference between MLBB and LOL?
For those familiar with the games, the answer to this question is a no-brainer. But for someone new to the scene, it can be confusing. MLBB requires a smartphone to play while LOL needs a computer. Nevertheless, both have distinct differences when it comes to gameplay, mechanics, maps, or heroes.
To help you make wise esports betting decisions, below is a discussion about the differences between the two most prominent MOBA franchises of the current generation.
MLBB and LOL: An Overview
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and League of Legends are both multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games with a huge market not only in Southeast Asia but around the globe. These games also offer some top esports tournaments with millions of audiences cheering for their teams.
In a MOBA game, players control a character with a set of abilities that enhance over the game’s duration. MLBB call these characters “heroes”, while LOL call them “champions”.
The main objective in both games is to crush your opponent team’s “Nexus” (or main structure). Turrets (or towers) protect the Nexus and are pre-positioned across the map. Each team has “minions”, which are computer-controlled units that help in destroying these structures.
Both games involve 5v5 matches that are fought in three-lane maps (The Land of Dawn in MLBB and Summoner’s Rift in LOL).
For a bit of history, LOL is a “spiritual successor” of Warcraft, which is one of MOBA pioneers. Some Warcraft developers worked with Riot Games, Inc. leading to the release of this game in 2009.
Meanwhile, Mobile Legends brought the MOBA scene to the mobile landscape in 2016. However, due to a copyright lawsuit in 2022, the game was rebranded to what is currently known as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.
MLBB vs LOL: Gameplay, Mechanics, and Game Structure
The most striking differences between the two are in their pacing and complexity.
MLBB has a fast-paced, yet simple game design compared to LOL. A 5v5 MLBB match can last only around 10 to 20 minutes. On the other hand, a LOL match can last around 20 minutes to one hour.
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang’s simple mechanics provide players with a low learning curve. Once you understand basic controls, you can decently play the game without mastery of the tactics and strategies.
For instance, “creep farming” is not a big deal in MLBB. Even if a player fails to kill a minion, they can still earn some gold and experience as long as they are near a dead one.
Moreover, objectives in MLBB can be achieved even at an individual level. A single hero can slay the Lord and Turtle, as long as it is well-equipped and at a high level. Unlike in LOL where most objectives require a team effort.
Mana regen, health regen, and skills cooldown are also faster in MLBB. So, heroes can roam and fight longer before returning to base, leading to frequent skirmishes or team clashes. In other words, ML’s game structure pushes players to be more aggressive.
On the other hand, LOL games are designed to be longer, more strategic, and complex. In this game, champions must recall (or return to base) to purchase an item and create a build. While in MLBB, your hero can acquire items on the fly. With these mechanics, LOL players must think wisely when to engage in fights, farm gold, or recall to base.
Dissimilar to MLBB, “creep farming” (earning gold from killing minions) is a huge thing in LOL. If you fail to “last hit” or kill a LOL minion, you get 0 gold. If you fail to earn much gold from creep farming, you might struggle to purchase items and outfight your opponents.
Furthermore, LOL’s skills and stats cooldown are slower compared to ML (except in some popular champions like Yasuo, Zed, or Katarina). Hence, players must balance their aggressiveness and prudence to make the most out of their skills and mana.
MLBB vs LOL: Map
MLBB’s map, The Land of Dawn, is almost a mirror image on both ends with some slight differences in the objective positions. It is also smaller compared to LOL’s Summoner’s Rift.
There is also the absence of Fog of War in MLBB, so players can see the entire map at all times, except for some areas that provide stealth to enemies (i.e. bushes). In LOL, a team can only see portions of the map within their champions’ range or using an item called “wards”.
Both maps follow the same structure with top, middle, and bottom lanes. In MLBB, one player takes the mid lane (usually the mage player), and the remaining pairs take the top (fighter and tank/assassin) and bottom lanes (support and marksman).
Meanwhile, in League of Legends, one player takes the mid lane (mage/assassin). Another player takes the top (fighter/tank) and two takes the bottom (support and marksman). One last player is also needed to serve as the “jungle” that roams around and farms neutrals.
MLBB vs LOL: Character and Character Abilities
It is no secret that Moonton’s MLBB is inspired by LOL. So, some heroes share uncanny similarities with champions.
Take Granger (MLBB) and Jhin (LOL), who are both marksman characters. They share some similarities in terms of animation, design, passive skills, and ultimate abilities.
Also, Layla (MLBB) and Jinx (LOL) are pretty much carbon copies of one another except that Layla resembles some skills from LOL champions Lux and Ashe. Alucard (MLBB) and Raven (LOL) also share the same playing style (chasing enemies using a quick sequence of abilities) and ultimate abilities.
However, a notable difference among characters in these games is their skill sets. In MLBB, heroes have three active abilities and one battle spell while in LOL, champions have four active abilities and two spells.
